As a constituent, I’m writing to urge immediate congressional action to pass a government funding bill to ensure the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) isn’t disrupted any further. The longer we find ourselves in a partial federal government shutdown, the higher chance babies and young children are at risk of hunger, poor nutrition, and developmental challenges. WIC serves nearly 7 million mothers, pregnant women, and children who rely on the program for access to nutritious food, breastfeeding support, infant formula, nutrition education, and healthcare referrals. While WIC has historically remained open for business during government shutdowns, state WIC agencies are beginning to run out of funding options - escalating the risk of hunger and hardship. General and emergency federal resources for WIC are quickly diminishing meaning WIC will experience clinic closures or disruptions in service delivery to at-risk populations. We are seeing some states cutting back on programming or furloughing staff. Eventually families will lose access to infant formula, breastfeeding support, and other critical WIC services if additional federal funding is not distributed soon. A major disruption of WIC services will lead to negative health outcomes for moms, babies, and young children. Congress can prevent this by passing a government funding bill immediately and providing WIC with the resources needed to serve families without disruption. WIC has a proven track record of improving maternal and child health. For nearly 50 years, WIC has demonstrated its ability to adapt and thrive, even during periods of uncertainty. Its decades of bipartisan backing reflect a shared commitment across political lines to support families, reduce food insecurity, and promote healthier futures. Policymakers should not force families to make impossible choices about how to feed their newborns and young children. I urge you to work with your congressional colleagues to pass a government funding bill to ensure WIC is provided with the necessary resources to serve families without disruption. Families across the country deserve better than the uncertainty created by political gridlock.
